Jeroen Vrolijk New Morning II

Wolfgang Maiwald

Wolfgang Maiwald was born in Germany and began playing the piano at the age of fourteen as an autodidact. He started writing songs and lyrics, playing in a local band as a singer and keyboard player. He studied music at the University of Oldenburg, Germany and founded a recording studio together with two fellow musicians in 1987. In 1989 he won first prize for best upcoming talent at the jazz contest “Jugend Jazzt Niedersachsen”. Despite his severe visual handicap he decided to start a career in music and moved to Holland to study jazz piano at the Amsterdam School Of Arts, Hilversum Conservatory in 1990. His teachers were Henk Elkerbout and Rob Madna and in 1995 he graduated “cum laude” for both teaching and performing.

Ever-since Wolfgang is playing performances and concerts in different styles and formations in the Netherlands and abroad. Wolfgang has been sharing the stage with famous Dutch and international (jazz)musicians like Ferdinand Povel, Cameron Brown, Rick Margitza, Joe Lovano, Tim Ries, Miguel Martinez, Jesse van Ruller, Benjamin Herman, Jan Menu, Bart van Lier, Ben van den Dungen, Deborah Carter, Ben van Gelder, Willem Hellbreker, Robin Verheyen, Tineke Postma, Maarten Ornstein, Jasper Blom, Susanne Alt, Ed Verhoeff, Yaniv Nachum, Ellen ten Damme a.o..

But Wolfgang is more than a jazz pianist. He knows his way well with electronic musical gear, studio equipment and contemporary styles like funk, soul and dance music. Besides that runs a small recording studio where he produces for various artists and has been writing and producing for the German television station ZDF. Wolfgang also teaches jazz piano at the DJAM, the School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Amsterdam.

"...The improvisations seem like extensions of the composed material in a way that is too often lacking in jazz groups. And this is a group! A very solid effort that merits being heard."
Dennis Luxion, jazz pianist and composer, Columbia College, Chicago

" He has a real voice as a composer and has managed to create an environment for his playing that serves his voice as an improviser."
Rick Margitza, tenor saxophonist

"...I was thrilled by his fine approach to the piano. There is a lot of space in his playing, wich is very rare nowadays. A surprise for lovers of jazz piano."
Jan Huydts, jazz pianist
