Florian Weiss’ Woodism

Band

Switserland

Biography

Ideally, a tight music ensemble is connected by an invisible elastic thread: when one end is pulled, every member of the band moves in sync with it. This is the perfect description of Woodism. The four musicians mesh perfectly as they shift confidently and fluidly from one composition to the next.

The band was founded in 2014 by trombonist Florian Weiss under the name “Woodoism”. Three years later, Weiss and fellow quartet members, Linus Amstad (alto sax), Valentin v. Fischer (double bass) and Philipp Leibundgut (drums) released their self-titled debut album. Their sophomore album Refugium, issued on the German-based record level Neuklang, followed in 2019. Music press reviews called it a “magic brew” and lauded the quartet for creating a daring, original sound that inhabits the stylistic space between cool and free jazz. The foursome obeys no dynamic other than their own, and from early on have done everything to avoid being pigeonholed. Spring 2021 saw the release of the band’s third album «Alternate Reality», issued on Nils Wogram’s label NWog Records. The band is called “Woodism” since 2023 and is planning their 4th album release for 2024.
